B is for Bathing

Bathing is hugely underestimated for its usefulness as a health aid, yet its a great place to perform a weekly maintenance session.  A standard size bath is a great place to work on your skin with a flannel over the palm of your hand - toning, exfoliating and stimulating the largest excretory organ of the body.  

A sitz bath, for the lower half of the body, can be both soothing and therapeutic, warm or cold, and helps those conditions such as constipation, haemorrhoids, anal fissures and post rectal surgery.  The benefit of using a sitz bath is that the temperature of the water can be easily controlled or altered, whilst avoiding the light-headed effect that may occur in a full-sized bath.  

Better known is the Epsom salts bath - or hydrated magnesium sulfate. Epsom salt is rich in magnesium and is easily absorbed through the skin. Whilst poorly absorbed through the stomach, studies show increased magnesium levels from soaking in a bath enriched with Epsom salt!  Epsom salts baths are a great aid for recovery from any activity, especially in the heat of the summer - check out www.epsomsaltscouncil.org for heaps of useful info.

Sulphates play an important role in the formation of brain tissue, joint proteins and the proteins that line the walls of the digestive tract. Add 2-4 cups of Epsom salts to the bath and soak for 20 minutes - optimally once a week.
